Boluoke vs Serrapeptase

Earthworms have been used in Eastern medicine practice for several centuries. Today, Boluoke is the highly concentrated lumbrokinase extract used for blood coagulation balance. Boluoke (containing the enzyme lumbrokinase) is a thoroughly-researched protein mixture extracted from earthworms that is known to prevent blood clotting and promote healthy blood circulation overall.

On the other hand, serrapeptase, also known as Serratia peptidase, is another enzyme that can be harnessed and used for anti-inflammatory benefits. This enzyme can be consumed in coated tablets and when absorbed by the intestine, promotes fibrinolytic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-edemic activity. In other words, it aids circulation via the prevention of blood clotting and can be extremely useful in pain reduction.

What is Boluoke used for?

As mentioned above, Boluoke can be a rather powerful agent when it comes to improving your blood circulation. The question is, how exactly does this occur? This is due to Boluoke’s main ingredient - the enzyme lumbrokinase. This enzyme is derived from earthworms and has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for a few centuries. 

Lumbrokinase has been classified as a fibrinolytic enzyme, meaning that it breaks down fibrinogen, a protein that causes blood clotting. It has also been labeled as an antithrombotic agent, an agent that prevents blood cells from sticking together, thus limiting the impact of diseases like strokes, heart attacks, and deep vein thrombosis (DVT). 

Popular anticoagulant drugs such as Coumadin (warfarin), aspirin, and Plavix (clopidogrel) are examples of other antithrombotic agents. Many alternative practitioners consider lumbrokinase to be a natural substitute for these drugs. 

In fact, in a 2016 study published in the Journal of Molecular and Cellular Cardiology, patients with Coronary Artery Disease (CAD), experienced improved cardiovascular blood markers, reduced arrhythmia (heartbeat disorders), and reduced mortality when treated with lumbrokinase.

In another study from the Chinese Medical Journal, patients hospitalized due to ischemic stroke were treated with a daily dose of lumbrokinase alongside their standard care. By the end of the study, these patients experienced better health outcomes than those who weren’t treated with lumbrokinase.

What is Serrapeptase used for?

Similar to Boluoke, serrapeptase is an enzyme isolated from silkworms. It too has been used for years in Japan and Europe as an anti-inflammatory agent. Researchers in these countries have proposed that serrapeptase is the most effective proteolytic enzyme for reducing inflammation. Today, it is widely available as a dietary supplement.

Among its anti-inflammatory effects, serrapeptase has been known to curb pain, whether due to surgery, trauma, or other inflammatory conditions. One study in the Journal of International Medicine Research determined that, in nearly 200 people with inflammatory ear, nose, and throat conditions, participants who took serrapeptase experienced significant reductions in pain. 

Serrapeptase has also been associated with infection prevention and reduction. As an enzyme, it inhibits the formation of biofilms and therefore is able to increase the effectiveness of antibiotics. 

In fact, animal studies have shown that serrapeptase aids antibiotic treatment of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), a leading cause of healthcare-related infections.

Does Serrapeptase dissolve blood clots?

Yes, among its other benefits, serrapeptase may be influential in breaking up and preventing blood clots. Though more research is necessary to determine exactly what role this enzyme plays in the process, it is thought to act by breaking down damaged tissue and fibrin - an insoluble protein created during the clotting of blood. 

Because of this, serrapeptase has been said to be beneficial in treating atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is better known as the buildup of fats, cholesterol, and other harmful substances inside your artery walls (plaque) and is often the culprit behind various heart conditions. 

When taken orally via dietary supplement, the doses typically range from 10 mg to 60 mg per day.

Which is better: Nattokinase or Serrapeptase?

Nattokinase is another valuable enzyme for your body. This enzyme is produced from nattō, a type of traditional Japanese food that contains soybeans fermented with the bacterium Bacillus subtilis. Lab studies have shown that it too can break down fibrin in the blood, and may even play a role in the reduction of high blood pressure. It has also been used as a treatment for Alzheimer’s disease and cancer. It was identified for this role by researcher Hiroyuki Sumi, however, it has been known for centuries for its positive medicinal properties. 

Both serrapeptase and nattokinase are widely known for helping the immune system respond to injury. As we learned earlier in the article, serrapeptase has been associated with anti-inflammatory properties, pain reduction, and infection treatment. Just as serrapeptase successfully targets excess fibroid tissue, nattokinase is especially helpful when targeting blood clots in the cardiovascular system.

After testing over 200 natural foods, nattokinase’s primary identifier, Hiroyuki Sumi, labeled this enzyme as having “a potency matched by no other enzyme.” Furthermore, being that it is found primarily in a fermented food, it contains large amounts of vitamin K2. This vitamin, along with magnesium, is critical for regulating the body’s calcium and preventing its buildup within your arteries. 

Lumbrokinase enzymes have been medically studied for decades in Asia.  Beyond the well-established benefits, more recent studies have shown improved healing in diabetic ulcerations and post-stroke recovery.
